ITINERARY

Day 1: City Tour: Cusco – Cathedral – Qoricancha – Sacsayhuman – Qenqo – Puca Pucara – Tambomachay

We will pick you up from your hotel to begin your tour between 12:00 and 12:30. We Will visit Cusco, with its unique beauty and charm, is considered the archaeological capital of South America and a Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This half-day city tour takes you to the majestic Qoricancha, one of the finest examples of the fusion between Inca architecture and Spanish colonial construction. You will also visit the four most important archaeological sites located in the hills surrounding Cusco. These remarkable sites are essential for understanding the historical, religious, and military importance of Cusco during the Inca Empire.

Qoricancha

Qoricancha, this centuries-old religious center, was built to worship the Sun, the most revered deity of the Inca Empire and the foundation of much of Inca culture. Inside the temple, you will find smaller shrines dedicated to the Sun, Moon, stars, and other sacred deities. To construct this site, the Incas used extraordinary masonry techniques, carefully placing and shaping similarly sized stone blocks with remarkable precision.

Outside the temple, you will see beautiful gardens and fountains surrounding the monumental complex, along with colorful flowers lining the pathways. One of the most fascinating aspects of Qoricancha is the combination of outstanding Inca stonework and Spanish colonial architecture.

Cathedral

Located in Cusco’s Main Square, the Cathedral is a colonial monument of exceptional artistic value. It was built on top of the Inca palace foundations. Inside, you can admire impressive carved wooden works such as the choir, pulpits, and altars, as well as beautiful paintings from the famous Cusco School of Art.

One of the most famous paintings is the “Last Supper,” where Christ and his disciples are shown eating cuy, or guinea pig, a traditional Andean dish. You will also find magnificent works covered in embossed silver and gold leaf.

Among the many churches located in Cusco, the Cathedral is one of the most important because it represents the fusion of Andean and colonial cultures. Standing proudly in the Plaza de Armas, it remains one of the historical and cultural symbols of Cusco.

Sacsayhuamán

Located about two kilometers from Cusco’s city center, Sacsayhuamán is an impressive archaeological site built with enormous carved stones joined together with astonishing precision. It is incredible to imagine how the Incas engineered such massive structures centuries ago.

From this site, you can also enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Cusco and the surrounding mountains. Sacsayhuamán is composed of three overlapping terraces stretching for roughly 360 meters. Some of the stones used in its construction measure up to 9 meters high and are among the largest stones ever used in pre-Hispanic America.

The most famous area of Sacsayhuamán is its grand esplanade and the massive zigzag terrace walls that dominate the landscape.

Qenqo

Located about 1.5 kilometers from Sacsayhuamán, Qenqo was an important Inca ceremonial and religious center. Its name is believed to come from the intricate underground passageways and carved channels found throughout the site.

One of the most interesting features of Qenqo is its underground galleries and ceremonial chambers, which create a mysterious atmosphere. The most prominent area is an open space known as the amphitheater, where Inca mummies were once placed inside the 19 trapezoidal niches surrounding the area.

Although only part of the original structure remains today, Qenqo continues to be one of the most fascinating archaeological sites near Cusco.

Puca Pucara

Puca Pucara, known as the “Red Fortress,” gets its name from the reddish coloration of its stones caused by the high iron content in the area. Many historians believe this site functioned as a military checkpoint and resting place that protected nearby Tambomachay.

At this archaeological site, you can observe excellent examples of Inca architecture, including terraces, fountains, aqueducts, and several enclosures.

Tambomachay

Tambomachay, the final site on your tour, is famous for its finely carved stonework, aqueducts, and waterfalls that continue to carry fresh water from nearby natural springs.

For this reason, Tambomachay is closely associated with the Inca water cult and ceremonies dedicated to water worship. In front of the complex, there is also a tower-like structure believed to have served as a lookout and communication point.
