ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA – HUMANTAY LAKE – SALKANTAYPAMPA

This spectacular adventure begins at 4:30 a.m. with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco in private transportation. We’ll drive for about two hours to the picturesque town of Mollepata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where we’ll enjoy breakfast. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic views of mountains, small valleys, and traditional Andean villages, including the fertile Limatambo Valley — known for its avocado production thanks to its mild, tropical climate.

After breakfast, we’ll continue for another hour by car to Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), the starting point of our trek. Here, you’ll meet the horses and muleteers who will carry the luggage during the journey. Once everything is organized, we’ll begin the ascent to the stunning Humantay Lagoon (4,200 m / 13,779 ft), a hike that takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

At the top, you’ll have time to enjoy the breathtaking turquoise waters of the lagoon, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Andes. It’s the perfect spot to rest, take photos, and appreciate the natural beauty of this magical place.

Weather in Cusco

The weather in Cusco is quite unpredictable and doesn’t follow the traditional four seasons. In fact, it’s common to experience all types of weather in a single day — from sunshine to rain and even cold winds.

That’s why we highly recommend visitors come prepared for all conditions, bringing both rain gear and sun protection, regardless of the time of year.

Group Size & Difficulty

Max group size: 8 (typical 2–8). The Salkantay Trek is moderately to challenging; good health and prior conditioning are recommended.

What Happens If I Can’t Finish the Trek

If you’re unable to complete the trek due to health reasons, Nomad In Peru will assist you to the nearest town for medical help and transportation. We always carry oxygen for altitude-related issues.

Please note that no refunds are provided in such cases. Most trekkers who leave the trail early are taken to Ollantaytambo, and if they recover in time, they can continue to Aguas Calientes (at their own expense) and visit Machu Picchu as planned.

Wildlife & Flora

The Salkantay Trek crosses diverse ecosystems, providing the chance to observe native wildlife such as Andean condors, llamas, and—if you’re lucky—the elusive spectacled bear.

Along the trail, you’ll also encounter a rich variety of flora, including orchids, bromeliads, and ancient Polylepis trees, all contributing to the region’s incredible biodiversity.

Tipping

If you’re satisfied with the services provided, tipping is appreciated, though not mandatory.

While it may not be customary in your home country, tips are highly valued by the staff who will take care of you throughout the trek.
